FERTILE FOOD CORNER

How does my weight affect my chances to conceive?

Women who are extremely overweight OR underweight often stop ovulating.  It may be nature's way of ensuring checks and balances because often these pregnancies are quite complicated and end in miscarriage or birth defects.

Fat cells are hormonally active by producing estrogen.  If you have too many fat cells, you may become estrogen dominant, thereby throwing off the delicate balance of your hormonal system.

Too few fat cells can create estrogen deficiency, causing irregular (or no) ovulation, poor vaginal fertile mucus and dwindling sex drive.

How do you know if you are at the ideal weight for conception?

Your best bet is to keep your BMI (Body Mass Index) number between 20-24.  That means your height and weight are proportional.  To figure out your BMI, look at the chart on http://www.consumer.gov/

weightloss/bmi.htm

Please remember that these are just guidelines and if you are trying to lose or gain weight, please do it very slowly!

FEATURE ARTICLE: WEIGHT LOSS

Quick Tips to LOSE Weight This Holiday Season

Yes, you heard me correctly.  I said actually LOSE weight, instead of praying you don't GAIN weight.  How to do this with grace?  For a complete set of tips and very effective strategies, join me for a FREE one hour teleclass on Tuesday, November 29th at noon.  Completely free!  See below for details to sign up and get your call-in number.

In the meantime, here are my top two suggestions, which will be covered more in depth during the teleclass:

1.  Eat your heart out on Thanksgiving, Christmas and/or one night of Hanukkah.  Why?  Because one night makes absolutely no difference, if the other 90% of your time is spent following suggestions 2-5.  If you deprive yourself when you really want all that delicious food in front of you, I guarantee you will be much more likely to keep snacking, sneaking treats and using food for comfort during these holiday months.  Actually allowing yourself full grace on special days goes a long way to prevent any “"I deserve" eating at other times.

2.  Decide in advance which night out of every week you will drink. Alcohol and sugar, especially at night, are the top two reasons you will not only gain weight, but prevent yourself from losing weight.  So out of the week, how many parties do you have? How many times will you be tempted?  Decide in advance which one night you REALLY want to allow alcohol (if any!), and the rest of the tempting nights don't even consider it.  Pre-conscious thought about this empowers you, instead of leaving you feeling like you have no will power.

See details below to sign up for the FREE teleclass on November 29th to learn the rest of the tips, recipes and techniques that will make you so proud of yourself!

CYNTHIA'S LATEST EXPERIMENT

How to NOT Spill Homemade Nut Milk All Over Your Kitchen

After years of being in the whole food community, I decided it was finally time to make my own nut milk. A daunting task you may think?  Nah.. just a little messy.

You can find many varieties of almond milk, soy milk, rice milk, even oat and multi-grain milks in health food stores these days. They are great alternatives to dairy, but the problem is that they come in tetra-paks (those un refrigerated cardboard boxes) with linings that can leach potentially dangerous toxins into the product you are drinking.

So, ideally, making your own is best. Here is how I did it:

1 cup soaked and rinsed (8-12 hours) almonds, walnuts, pecans, seeds, etc

2-3 cups pure filtered water

3-4 dates (optional)

1 tsp vanilla extract

Blend very well.  Pour into cheesecloth or nut-milk bag and squeeze until no more liquid remains in the bag. Makes 3-4 cups, and you can control the “"richness" with more or less water.

(To order a nut-milk bag, go to www.rawgourmet.com)

Now for a smart woman, I can be real dumb sometimes.  Apparently I didn't get the memo that you are not supposed to squeeze the milk from the straining bag directly into the jar because IT WILL GO EVERYWHERE. Yes, my very expensive $12 per pound organic almond milk was squeezed onto the counter, floor and the walls. Please learn from my mistake and squeeze GENTLY into a very large bowl first. Then you can pour and store in a large glass jar. And don't put all the pulp into the cloth at once. Squeeze in very small increments. The milk will last approximately 3-5 days.

Even for all my kitchen trauma, I must say this almond milk was absolutely delicious! Fresh, creamy and naturally sweet. A perfect after dinner drink or mid-day snack for the holiday season.

Are you ready to try it?
