A NOTE FROM CYNTHIA...

On a Personal Note..

My dancing career is reborn!  I am now rehearsing with an NY-based Dance Company and will be performing in the fall.  I'll be shakin' it with Jazz, Hip-Hop and Modern Dance styles.  If anyone likes to boogie (or just appreciates dance!).. come see me, and don't forget to say hello after the show. (Details TBD after the summer :)

Now, spring is here and my antennas are out for what everyone thinks is the next big thing in dieting or detox.

As most of you know, I'm not a fan of "FAD" anything.

So the new buzz is "The Lemonade Diet," also called the Master Cleanse.    This protocol is anything but new, as it was actually created in the 1940's to heal major illnesses.

Read below to learn more and decide if it is right for you to try now for your spring detox!

As always, I love to hear from you. Have questions or comments about anything in this newsletter?  Don't hesitate to email me at cynthia@cynfullyhealthy.com.

SUCCESS STORY

We all have to reach out for help from time to time.  The friend I reached out to luckily referred me to Cynthia.

She called me.  She called me twice.  With an out of control schedule and a to-do list a mile long I really did not have time for me, for my health, for my life.

I have time now.  Every day I now have time for me, for thinking about what I put into my body.  It takes about ten seconds.

I am not on a diet.  I am on a mission.

I am not on a program.  I am being educated.

This was something I knew could not be done alone.  After a short period of time, it is almost beyond explanation how easy it is.  I am not limited, I have more choices, and I am actually eating more.

My participation with Cynthia has given me the opportunity to get back the lasting healthy feeling a left behind a decade ago.

I lost 20 lbs. and I am just getting started!

What is the deal with the Lemonade Diet, also called the Master Cleanse?

The Lemonade Diet, The Master Cleanse, the stuff with the maple syrup… it is all the same.. and it is not new!

Beyonce did it to lose 23 lbs for “Dreamgirls.”  You are probably not starring in the next movie musical, so I don’t suggest you do the same.  She actually denounced it later saying, “There are better ways to lose weight.”  I agree, but let’s look it from a few perspectives to see if it may be something you want to try.

What is the Master Cleanse?

Originally developed by Stanley Burroughs in 1941, it was intended to promote maximum detoxification and give the body a rest from the daily grind of digestive wear and tear, thereby activating the body’s natural healing abilities to cure chronic diseases such as cancer.  Detox is any process that helps rid your body of stored up toxins, chemicals, old fecal matter and excess fat (the toxins live in your fat).  Most detox protocols tend to target the liver, the organ responsible for filtering all impurities from your blood.  Some detox protocols will also target cleansing the colon, ridding your body of stored up gunk that is living in your intestinal tract.  The Master Cleanse is designed to do both, although it is highly recommended to take fiber powder, psyllium or a salt flush in the morning to ensure regular and complete bowel movements.

The protocol involves eating no solid food and drinking a mixture of water, fresh lemon juice, cayenne pepper and grade B maple syrup for a minimum of ten days, although it is not uncommon for people to stay on the cleanse for longer periods of time.

Here is a quote directly from Stanley Burroughs from his book, “The Master Cleanser,”:

"For the novice and the advanced student alike, cleansing is basic for elimination of every kind of disease. The purpose of this book is to simplify the cause and the correction of all disorders, regardless of the name or names. As we eliminate and correct one disease, we correct them all, for every disease is corrected by the same process of cleansing and building positive good health. Man's mastery of disease will only be final when ignorance and fear are overcome by proper observance of all laws pertaining to the creation of bones, flesh, and blood."

You can easily order “The Master Cleanser” by Stanley Burroughs via online book stores.

Why would I risk turning myself into a maple syrup coated lemon?

  • Huge jumpstart to losing weight
  • Feel more energetic than you ever have before
  • Eliminate cravings to set the stage for healthier food choices
  • Experience more mental clarity and peace
  • Clear up nagging health concerns like digestive distress, headaches and acne
  • For women, lowers estrogen levels and reduces symptoms of PMS and painful periods

Even doing the cleanse for a short term, such as three days, can accomplish several of the above.

What are the dangers?

  • Can cause severe reactions of fainting and heart problems for anyone with hypoglycemia or sugar imbalances
  • Long-term (more than two weeks) deficiency of protein, vitamins, and minerals may cause dizziness, delirium, and fainting in the short-term, with possible more severe damage long-term
  • No energy, no strength.. can’t function in daily life
  • Potential detox symptoms like severe headaches, skin eruptions, sleep changes, funny smells
  • The salt water flush, recommended as part of it, can eliminate all beneficial bacteria so this must be replaced carefully
  • Returning back to solid food diet improperly can cause major intestinal distress
  • Can exacerbate conditions such as IBS instead of helping it

Should I or Shouldn’t I?

Cynthia’s take on this whole thing…

I have done this protocol myself and seen many clients try it.   I did it for about four days, and the second and third day were rough for me as I am used to eating 4-5 times per day.  Since there is a such a huge calorie reduction so quickly, I felt a bit spacy (my brother, Bruce, will say I’m spacy all the time, but that is just not true!), low energy and irritable. These symptoms could have just been normal detox reactions, but it wasn’t fun.  However, it is true that you are not STARVING because you are drinking a mixture with sugar in it all day, so it helps to curb the hunger.

If you are prone to constipation, as many of my clients are, you must take some sort of bulking agent or do the salt flush.   I do not recommend stimulant herbs such as cascara or senna.  They are too harsh and will throw your system off for days.

I do not recommend doing this while you are trying to live your active, busy life.  You will need to slow down, breathe, get in the sunshine and give your mind and body permission to relax.   No gym, no chasing around the dog (or the children).

After the cleanse, I, like many of my clients, did feel great.  My energy was high, I felt clear and focused  (yes, Bruce, I am a rock star when I am not cleansing) and although I wasn’t trying to lose weight, I did.

But please don’t be deceived about losing weight.  The weight you lose, although some of it will genuinely be fat, can very easily and quickly come back if you do not:

  • Change your eating habits to eat more clean, unprocessed food
  • Ease back into your food choices with raw salads, broths and cooked grains
  • Stop overeating!!

So if you have sugar imbalance concerns, tend to be constipated or cannot slow down, this may not be the right cleanse for you.  There are plenty of other options!

Check out the April 2006 e-newsletter posted on my website at http://cynfullyhealthy.com/newsletters.html for a quick and easy three step cleanse that only lasts about a week.

Summer is a great time for cleansing.  Have fun!
