FERTILE FOOD CORNER

Can eating whole grains influence my chances to conceive?

Yes!  Besides being nutritional powerhouses, whole grains described in the feature article to the right are "building" foods that are very appropriate for a woman wishing to balance her reproductive cycle and prepare for pregnancy.  It is not advisable to partake in any harsh cleansing programs or eat a primarily raw food diet.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, conception and healthy pregnancy are best acheived with foods that subtly support the energy of key reproductive health organs.  Brown rice, quinoa and millet are all delicious, appropriate grains to enjoy.

How to Eat Whole Grains, Even While Losing Weight

The South Beach Diet is actually on to something because true whole grains are not something to be feared when trying to lose weight. In fact, they should be relished!

When incorporated correctly for you (meaning certain people will have to adjust the type and amount for their body type), whole grains will provide essential nutrients, lasting energy and a great weapon against extreme sugar cravings.

So what is a whole grain?  It’s not just wheat!  Most whole grains are actually the edible seeds of plants in the grass family.  These seeds or kernels are also loaded with nutrients like B vitamins, anti-oxidants, fiber and even protein.

Here are two fantastic whole grains you may not be familiar with.  They cook easily, just like rice.  Boil some water, throw it in, cover and simmer for the recommended time on the package.

Check out:

Quinoa (pronouned keenwah)

One of my favorites! Looks like fluffy cous cous, cooks in about 15 minutes, has an earthy, nutty flavor, and has a very impressive protein profile.  Try the original or the red variety.

Cyn’s Quick Meal Tip:  After cooking, throw in a can of corn, some salsa, chopped onion, and salt and pepper to taste.   Delish and done in 30 seconds!

Amaranth

Kind of reminds me of the texture of creamed corn.  Cooks quickly with a porridgy finish and a little bit goes a very long way to fill you up.  Loaded with protein and calcium (perhaps you can see now why vegetarians can easily get enough protein?).

Cyn’s Quick Meal Tip:  Try cooking it with garlic, onion, pinch of salt and a touch of organic butter for a grits-like side dish.

Most everyone knows about wheat, but you may not know that “whole wheat” breads, wraps and pastries are often highly processed and sometimes even mixed with white flours.  Whole wheat products are certainly a step up from pure white flour ones, but make sure your products are 100% whole wheat, or rye, or whatever grain the product is made from.

Now you may be thinking, “ I know these may be good for me, but I will never lose weight eating this starchy stuff!”

Nonsense!  The late Dr. Atkins, whom I do greatly respect for many important scientific contributions to the nutrition world, did scare the twinkies out of us to make CARB a four letter word.  I’ve seen countless clients enjoy hot buckwheat cereal for breakfast, savor teryiaki rice bowls with chicken or salmon for lunch and snack on dried fruit and nut bars, and still steadily see the pounds come off.  You can eat these foods with joy!

I do recommend certain guidelines to enjoy your grains while maximizing your weight loss efforts:

Eat your grains before 4pm and keep your last meal of the day starchy carb-free.

That means you can enjoy a hot breakfast cereal and perhaps a grain salad for lunch, but keep your dinner, preferably eaten at least 2 hours before bed, primarily consisting of non-starchy vegetables, like leafy greens, and a protein source like chicken or fish.

Eat only a baseball size portion of grains at any one time.

Eyeball it, but don’t get obsessed.  Even better, eat slowly and see how much you really need to be full!

Enjoy your grains and let me know your favorite!
