It is now spring, a perfect time to detox excess fat and toxins that have been hanging out since Winter. Don't make it complicated! This week's article will give you a simple plan to take action now. My weekly tip: Never go to sleep mad at yourself for what you eat! (the golden rule in relationships too, right?) What you do 10% of the time doesn't matter in the grand scheme of health and weight control. Breathe, forgive, approach your food with joy tomorrow.
In the six months that I worked with Cynthia, I learned many valuable lessons. Lesson One: Fad Diets are not for everyone. I learned that eating healthy is a ay of life and not just something one does to lose weight. The most important lesson of all was learning to accept my body and its limitations, to be able to enjoy food while not feeling guilty when I indulge a little. I went to Cynthia wanting to lose weight, yearning for an easy solution. I walked away knowing that the solution is to feed your body healthy foods, stay away from the processed stuff as much as possible, and to focus more on how my body felt rather than the numbers on the scale. Being healthy is now so much more attainable, and Cynthia made it so easy. Thank you so much! --Shana K, New York City
3 Easy Steps to Spring Into a One-Week Detox Detox is a big buzz word out there, but what does it really mean? Simply, it is any process that helps to rid your body of stored up toxins, chemicals, old fecal matter and excess fat (the toxins live in your fat). Most detox protocols tend to target the liver, the organ responsible for filtering all impurities from your blood. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the energetic function of the liver directly influences how other organs of your body will function as well, especially the kidneys, lungs and heart. Some detox protocols will also target cleansing the colon, ridding your body of stored up gunk that is living in your intestinal tract. Both actions are super necessary and crucial to the healthy function of your body. This simple 3-step protocol will target both.
There are two times of the year that your body naturally wants to detoxify based on ancient body rhythm cycles: Spring (March- April) and Autumn (September-October).
So why do it?
How do you do it? You can get real fancy with herbs and supplements, which is great if you are under supervised care from a knowledgeable health professional. But what you eat, or don’t eat, is the true remedy for any detox protocol. You can accomplish an effective, gentle cleanse just with food- no need for extra bells and whistles. And don’t think for a second that taking an herbal pill or tincture will do the trick without a clean, modified diet in conjunction!
So here is a quick One Week, 3 Step Plan you can implement immediately to clean the body house. All foods suggested are seasonal for this time of year to keep your body in synch with what it should naturally crave:
Step One: Start the day with a Liver Flush Drink
Upon rising, mix the following in your blender:
1 cup freshly squeezed citrus juices (Orange and grapefruit are good, but also mix in lemon and lime. The sourer, the better) 1-3 cloves raw garlic (Start with one and work up) ½ tsp fresh ginger juice (Grate ginger root and then press the pulp with cheesecloth or in a garlic press) 1 T. organic, extra virgin olive oil
Blend and drink. Take some time to stretch and breathe deeply. Try not to eat for one hour.
Step Two: Your First Meal is Fruit Based
Start your day with organic, fresh fruits such as berries, pear and green apples (excellent for cleansing the gall bladder). Avoid melons, bananas and other tropical fruits. You may add some fresh lemon juice.
You may also have unsweetened diluted fruit juices and caffeine-free herbal tea.
Step Three: Eat Simply For the Rest of the Day
Lunch and dinner should be focused on both raw and steamed spring vegetables. Include a raw salad at least once a day consisting of spring veggies like baby greens, mustard or dandelion greens, tomato, carrots, daikon radish, scallions, cucumber, celery, radishes. Dress with olive oil and apple cider vinegar or fresh lemon juice. Add fresh herbs if desired. You can also make a light soup for dinner with mixed vegetables, herbs, and sea vegetable like kombu for extra nutritional support.
Eat plenty of steamed veggies as well like broccoli, zucchini, peppers, string beans, etc.
Have one meal consisting of a simple whole grain like brown rice or quinoa and a fatty fish like wild salmon. Preferably, this meal would be lunch.
Drink lots of water and herbal tea.
Try to slow down during the week, breathe deeply and relax as much as possible. You may experience some detox reactions such as headaches, fatigue, skin itchiness and irregular bowel movements. These should pass in 2-3 days.

Daikon, or Japanese radish, is a pearly white root with a strong, crisp flavor. It kind of looks like a very large white carrot with a smooth surface (but don't get it confused with a parsnip!) It has great nutritional value, containing diuretics, decongestants, and digestive enzymes, making it an excellent complement for difficult to digest or fatty raw foods. An adult serving, about 3 ounces, is only 19 calories, provide a good source of vitamin C, and contain a substance that inhibits the formation of carcinogens in the body. It is the perfect vegetable for spring cleansing as it directly helps to break down fat from your body. Here are two great ways to try it if you never have before: Sweet Daikon Salad2 daikon radishes, shredded ½ c currents or raisons ½ c orange juice ½ tsp cinnamon pinch salt Combine all ingredients in a bowl and stir Flavors will intensify the longer you let it sit. Variations: Mix curry and oils until well blended Add scallions and mango Add sauce to cooled couscous and mix well
Daikon Condiment 1/4 cup freshly grated raw daikon Combine the ingredients and mound on a small plate. Sprinkle over fish, green vegetables or any other light summer fare.
